Reflection
In July 2016, I attended the Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) conference in Atlanta, GA with members of the administrative staff and leadership team of my school. This conference provided three days of sessions covering a wide variety of topics. The annual summer conference is one of the most comprehensive school improvement events in the nation, with presentations and panels featuring K-12 practitioners from core academics, career and technical education, counseling, school and district leadership, and other subject areas. The focus for me at the conference was to learn about best practices in mathematics and 21st century learning.
This conference is one example of how I demonstrate continual growth in knowledge and skills of current and emerging technologies and apply them to improve my productivity and my professional practice.
I was able to attend many sessions that showed me new ways to use technology tools for instruction, engagement, and assessment. I particularly enjoyed hearing and learning from the presenters - most of whom are current classroom teachers from across the United States. For me, professional development is important, but often times I find myself sitting through repetitive or ineffective professional development. I enjoyed this program because I was able to select with professional developments and sessions would best benefit me and my classroom and department.
After the conference, it was my role to come back to my department and present to them what I had learned in order to support the other teachers in my department and impact students across the school beyond my own classroom. Additionally, this conference gave me the necessary encouragement to try new things in my own classroom during the school year with my students.
