Artifact: Copyright Presentation
Reflection:
For this artifact, I created a presentation on an aspect of copyright laws designed for use with other teachers. In an increasingly connected world, it has become easier to simply use material found online without giving proper citations and credit. As teachers, it is important that we model for our students’ appropriate use with it comes to others work and products.
For this presentation, I focused on what allowed under copyright law to post online for use by students and other teachers on a teacher made homepage. For the project, I had to do research myself on the copyright laws and fair use. It was a learning experience for me, and I found myself double checking my own teacher webpage to ensure anything I posted followed copyright laws. I would go back and change some slides before presenting it to teachers, some slides need fewer words on a page and perhaps some graphics. I would make a handout to correspond with the presentation.
The artifact could be adapted for use in teaching students how to correctly use material found online as well. As teachers, it is our responsibility to teach our students how to use the Internet and its resources safely, legally, and ethically. Through this project, I also gained a better understanding of copyright law – making me reconsider some items I had posted on my own webpage.
Previously, our media specialist would pass out a brochure with basic information about copyright and fair use. I was able to share this presentation with her during next school year’s pre-planning.
