3.6 Selecting and Evaluating Digital Tools & Resources
Candidates collaborate with teachers and administrators to select and evaluate digital tools and resources for accuracy, suitability, and compatibility with the school technology infrastructure. (PSC 3.6/ISTE 3f)
Artifact: Emerging Technologies Project
Reflection:
For this project, I evaluated an emerging technology in instructional technology – in this case, Microsoft Surface Pro 3 tablets – and created a proposal PowerPoint to present to a hypothetical school governance council or school board. I had to research and learn about the technology itself, research-based support for its use, cost analysis, potential funding sources, and a timeline for implementation.
Through this project, I collaborated with teachers and administrators to select and evaluate digital tools. I worked alongside of my school’s media specialist to determine a resource to begin to research based on faculty requests and my personal interests. Additionally, I had to determine the suitability, compatibility, and sustainability within the school technology infrastructure through the cost analysis, timeline of implementation, and funding sources.
While it was for a hypothetical presentation, I did learn about the process used to evaluate, propose, and fund technology tools. I do think this artifact could be improved by completing an actual proposal form used by school districts for technology and other funding proposals to have that practice – and the make the presentation more realistic. I do believe that an actual proposal and evaluation would be much more robust.
This artifact gave me the practice on how to evaluate a technology resource for a school. It is important that all decisions that are made – particularly with purchases and involving student achievement – are data driven to best benefit the school and its students.
