Standard 1.3 Policies, Procedures, Programming, and Funding
Candidates research, recommend, and implement policies, procedures, programs and funding strategies to support implementation of the shared vision represented in the school, district, state, and federal technology plans and guidelines. Funding strategies may include the development, submission, and evaluation of formal grant proposals. (PSC 1.3/ISTE 1c)
Artifact: ITEC 7445 Evaluating an Emerging Technology
Reflection:
For this artifact, I researched an emerging technology tool in education, Microsoft Surface Pro, and created a presentation to share with members of my school district. The presentation was designed to inform them about the Microsoft Surface Pro, how it supports the technology vision of the school district, how it can be used at the different school levels - with a particular focus in the high schools, and fund sources available within the district for this technology.
The presentation I created demonstrates standard 1.3 in that I researched and recommended a technology that my district could use to support instructional technology at all levels. The purchase and use of the Microsoft Surface Pro supports the districts' Strategic Goal #3: Know Technology. Included in the presentation is a suggested implementation addressing lower grades, middle grades and high school level students at appropriate levels as well as offering a possible funding source through various funding sources as well as using current storage carts.
In completing this artifact, I learned how to research, create a recommendation identifying current policies, procedures and to support that recommendation. I do see where I could have used real time data from my school or district to support the adoption of the technology - and to make my case stronger. To improve the quality of the artifact, I would revise the presentation to include data from a pilot group who implemented the technology as well as including perception data from stakeholders in that pilot group.
With these skills, I would be able to effectively serve to help the school determine new technology purchases. For example, in my school district, a charter school district, school councils have the ability to choose whether to fund certain initiatives and where to most effectively use education funds. In order to make the best choice, the school council and stakeholders would need to know the information presented in this sample artifact.
